SETT History
SETT started in 1980 when two brothers, Jerry and Ronnie Sawyer, had the idea and mutual desire to host a regional tennis tournament for those in the oil and gas industry. Jerry, a local independent operator, and Ronnie, President of Sawyer Drilling & Service, Inc., were college athletes, Jerry in basketball at Louisiana Tech, and Ronnie in tennis at the University of Houston. It was their intention that SETT be a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere for those in the industry to establish new friendships, and to connect with others for business and social purposes.
Since its creation, SETT has seen the industry in all of its up and down stages. However, one thing has remained constant—the desire to make this tournament a place for participants to socialize with friends and to enjoy a fun filled weekend of tennis. This goal has been the driving force behind the tournament’s organization since its inception.
Jerry Sawyer was the driving force behind SETT until his death in 1998. Jerry's wife, Mary, and Jerry's family, as well as Ronnie and his wife, Dayna, have continued to be supporters of the tournament. It is a tribute to their strong foundation that SETT has been able to maintain its reputation as one of the premier regional tennis tournaments in the energy industry. It is the mission of the SETT Board of Directors to make sure that SETT remains a quality tennis tournament, one that will continue to make the founding Sawyer brothers proud of what they started.
